BREAD IN THE HISTORY OF MANKIND

Bread has very ancient origins that are difficult to reconstruct. It is the key element in human life, in religions and even in the ways of saying ("somebody's bread and butter").
Archaeological excavations and rock carvings testify to the existence of bread (unleavened) already about 10,000 years ago. Moreover, in Mesopotamia in 7000 BC it is certain the presence of the first mills for wheat and, therefore, the production of flour, which was then mixed with water and cooked on the fire.
The first techniques of fermentation, however, seem to belong to the ancient Egyptians, who were probably the first to consider the bread-making as an art and, in particular, the rising phenomenon as a sacred and almost magical, often represented in the hieroglyphs and in the tombs.
The Romans refined the technique of grinding, to the point of producing the first "white bread".
The Roman historian Plinio even talk about different kind of bread, including the panis testicius, the forerunner of our “piadina” and spread between the armies, in addition to strepticius, consisting of a mixture of flour, water, milk, oil, lard and pepper.
As central element of religious rites, the bread has an important value in the Bible and in the sacred texts, in addition to becoming a symbol of man's primary need for food and valuable element of everyday life.
